For dining rooms, chair movement is the key constraint. Lowe's recommends a rug that extends at least two feet beyond the table on every side. Living rooms and bedrooms have more than one valid layout, so the calculator shows a practical standard size and tells you what placement assumption it used.

Measure the table, then allow room for chairs to remain on the rug when pulled out. That is why dining rugs often need to be larger than people expect.
Living room rugs
A common approach is to put the front legs of the seating on the rug. Larger rooms can use a bigger rug with more furniture fully on it. A floating rug with no furniture legs on it is primarily decorative and should not be mistaken for a room-anchoring rug.
Bedroom rugs
The rug should extend far enough beyond the bed to give you usable rug underfoot. Standard 8×10 and 9×12 sizes are common because they work with many queen and king layouts.
